What is a loan comparison calculator?

A loan comparison calculator helps you compare two loan options by calculating the monthly EMI, total payments, and total interest. It is useful when choosing between different interest rates and tenures.

Choosing between two loan offers on EMI alone can cost lakhs in extra interest. This loan comparison calculator shows monthly payment, total interest, total paid and payoff date for Loan 1 vs Loan 2 — home, car or personal loans with fixed rate and equal monthly payments.

Add processing fees and insurance mentally — a "cheaper" rate with 1% fee may lose to a slightly higher rate with zero fee over 15–20 years. Compare total interest first, then confirm EMI fits your budget using Home Loan Eligibility Calculator.

Balance transfer scenarios: enter outstanding principal and remaining years, not original 20-year term if you are mid-loan. Run old rate as Loan 1 and new lender quote as Loan 2 to see if transfer fee is worth paying.

How to use this Loan Comparison Calculator

  • Enter Loan Amount, Interest Rate and Term for Loan 1 and Loan 2.
  • Select a Start date to estimate the payoff month/year.
  • The calculator shows monthly payment, total payments, total interest, and payoff date for each loan.

Formula

Monthly payment uses the standard EMI formula: \(EMI = P \times r \times (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1)\) where \(r\) is monthly interest rate and \(n\) is number of months.

What to compare side by side

  • Monthly EMI / payment
  • Total interest over full tenure
  • Total amount paid (principal + interest)
  • Payoff date
  • Processing fee, foreclosure, insurance (add separately)

Example: 0.5% rate difference

On ₹35 lakh for 20 years, 8.0% vs 8.5% can differ by ₹5+ lakh in total interest. Enter both rates here with same principal and term to see exact savings for your case.

Tenure trap warning

Lower EMI via longer tenure often increases total interest more than a 0.25% rate reduction saves. Compare offers at the same tenure first, then compare deliberate tenure trade-offs.

Complete Guide to Comparing Loans in India

Why compare loans before you sign?

Two loan offers with the same principal can cost lakhs apart over the full tenure because of differences in interest rate, tenure, processing fee, insurance bundling and prepayment rules. A loan comparison calculator puts Loan 1 and Loan 2 side by side — monthly payment, total interest, total amount paid and estimated payoff date — so you choose with data, not marketing brochures.

Indian borrowers commonly compare HDFC vs SBI home loan, bank vs NBFC car finance, or personal loan apps vs traditional banks. Headline rate alone misleads: a 8.40% offer with 1% processing fee and mandatory insurance may lose to 8.55% with zero fee and free foreclosure. Master Calc\'s free loan comparison calculator online focuses on core maths; add fees mentally or in a spreadsheet for final decision.

What to compare beyond monthly EMI

Lower EMI is not always cheaper. Stretching tenure cuts monthly outflow but increases total interest — sometimes by more than a slightly higher rate on shorter tenure saves. Compare these metrics for each option:

  • Monthly EMI / payment — cash flow impact today.
  • Total interest — true cost of borrowing over life of loan.
  • Total payments — principal plus all interest (fees extra).
  • Payoff date — when you become debt-free.
  • Processing fee, insurance, foreclosure charges — add separately.

Use this tool for EMI and interest totals, then cross-check eligibility with Home Loan Eligibility Calculator if buying property.

How the comparison formula works

Both loans use the standard reducing-balance EMI formula: EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1), where P is principal, r is monthly rate (annual ÷ 12 ÷ 100), and n is months. Total payment = EMI × n. Total interest = total payment minus principal. Payoff date adds tenure months to your chosen start date.

Example: ₹40 lakh at 8.5% for 20 years vs same amount at 8.0% for 20 years — the 0.5% rate gap saves roughly ₹6–7 lakh in total interest over the full term. Run both in this calculator with identical principal and term to see exact delta for your numbers.

Home loan comparison scenarios

Scenario A — rate vs tenure: Bank X offers 8.25% for 20 years; Bank Y offers 8.10% but pushes 25-year tenure for "affordable EMI." Compare both with same principal — Y may show lower EMI but higher lifetime interest. Scenario B — balance transfer: Compare remaining outstanding on old loan (higher rate, fewer years left) vs new lender quote including transfer fee. Enter outstanding as principal and remaining years as term.

Scenario C — fixed vs floating: Model floating at current rate, then rerun Loan 2 at +0.75% to simulate rate hikes over five years. Floating wins when rates fall; fixed wins in rising rate cycles for peace of mind. Neither is universally superior — stress-test both.

Car loan and personal loan comparison tips

Car loans are shorter; a 0.5% rate difference matters less in absolute rupees than on a 20-year home loan but still worth comparing dealer finance vs bank direct loan. Dealers sometimes inflate on-road price while showing "low EMI" — compare on same ex-showroom or on-road figure. Personal loans from fintech apps may show flat monthly fee marketing; convert to annualized rate before comparing with bank reducing-balance quotes.

Prepayment flexibility matters more on personal loans — many charge 2–4% on early closure. A slightly higher rate with zero foreclosure fee can beat a cheap loan you cannot exit when salary bonus arrives.

Processing fees and effective interest rate

A ₹40 lakh loan with ₹40,000 processing fee (1%) effectively borrows ₹39,60,000 while paying interest on full ₹40 lakh — raising true cost. Spread fee over tenure mentally: ₹40,000 over 20 years is ₹2,000/year extra. Some lenders offer "zero processing" festivals — compare total interest over full term, not festival headline alone.

GST on processing fee (18%) is often charged separately. Legal, valuation and MODT charges on home loans add thousands more — not in this calculator but material on ₹50 lakh+ transactions.

When to choose lower EMI vs lower total interest

Choose lower EMI when cash flow is tight — young families, single income households, or during career transition — but pair with plan to prepay when income rises. Use EMI Prepayment Calculator to see bonus impact. Choose lower total interest when you can comfortably afford higher EMI — closer to retirement, dual-income stable household, or investment income covering gap.

Never compare a 7-year car loan EMI only against a 15-year home loan EMI — match product type and purpose. This tool works for any fixed-rate amortizing loan with equal monthly payments.

Step-by-step: using this loan comparison calculator

  1. Enter identical loan amount for both options unless comparing different sanction sizes.
  2. Input each bank\'s annual interest rate from sanction letter.
  3. Set term in years for each offer (they can differ).
  4. Pick start date for payoff date display.
  5. Compare monthly payment, total interest and payoff date columns.
  6. Note winner on total interest; confirm EMI is affordable via income ratio.

Negotiating with banks using comparison data

Walk into branch with printout showing competitor EMI and total interest — relationship managers often have discretion on processing fee waiver or 0.05–0.10% rate concession for strong profiles. Public sector banks vs private HFCs trade off service speed vs rate — compare both in this tool before emotional loyalty to one brand.

Women borrower concessions, salary account holders and existing bank customers sometimes get 0.25% off — small on paper, material over 20 years. Ask explicitly; do not assume published rack rate is final.

Refinancing and top-up comparison

When comparing balance transfer, include foreclosure charge on old loan and processing + MODT on new loan in year-one cost. Break-even month = total transfer cost divided by monthly interest savings. If break-even exceeds planned stay in house or loan, transfer may not pay.

Top-up loan comparison: new money at home loan rate vs personal loan at higher rate — run top-up combined principal here against separate personal loan as Loan 2 in comparison tool.

Limitations and disclaimer

This calculator assumes fixed rate, monthly compounding and full amortization with equal payments. Actual loans may use different rounding, daily rests, step-up EMIs, moratorium periods or variable rates. Add fees separately. Results are educational estimates — not financial advice. Confirm amortization schedule with your lender before signing.

FAQ: Loan Comparison Calculator

What should I compare between two loans?expand_more

Compare monthly payment, total interest, total paid, and tenure. Lower EMI is not always better if total interest becomes higher.
