Complete Guide to Pregnancy Due Date Calculator and Naegele's Rule
What is estimated due date (EDD)?
Your estimated due date (EDD) is the projected day of delivery at 40 weeks gestation — a planning anchor for antenatal visits, maternity leave, anomaly scan booking and family preparation. Only about 5% of babies arrive exactly on EDD; normal term birth spans 37–42 weeks.
Master Calc's Pregnancy Due Date Calculator applies Naegele's rule — add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP) — the standard method Indian obstetricians use when cycles are regular and LMP is remembered accurately.
Naegele's rule explained
EDD = LMP + 280 days (equivalent to LMP + 9 calendar months + 7 days).
Example: LMP 15 January 2026 → EDD approximately 22 October 2026. The rule assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. If your cycles are longer (32–35 days), actual ovulation and conception occur later — LMP-based EDD may be early by several days until ultrasound dating corrects it.
Track cycle length with Menstrual Cycle Calculator before pregnancy for better LMP interpretation.
Ultrasound dating vs LMP
First-trimester ultrasound (8–12 weeks) measuring crown-rump length (CRL) is the most accurate gestational age method when done early. If ultrasound EDD differs from LMP by more than 5–7 days, Indian practice typically adopts ultrasound dates — especially with irregular periods, PCOS, or uncertain LMP after recent hormonal contraception.
Never skip antenatal care relying on calculator alone. Register with obstetrician or government ANC clinic; carry MCP card if eligible for JSY benefits.
Indian antenatal timeline
- Before 8–12 weeks: confirm intrauterine pregnancy, start folic acid and iron per doctor, baseline blood pressure and labs
- 11–13 weeks: NT scan / first-trimester screening where available
- 18–20 weeks: anomaly scan (level-II ultrasound)
- 24–28 weeks: gestational diabetes screen (OGTT) — high prevalence in Indian women
- 28 weeks onward: third trimester — fortnightly then weekly visits near term
- 36+ weeks: fetal position, growth, delivery planning
Trimesters and gestational age
First trimester: weeks 1–13 — organ formation, morning sickness common. Second trimester: weeks 14–27 — often most comfortable; feel fetal movements 18–22 weeks. Third trimester: weeks 28–40 — weight gain, Braxton Hicks, prepare hospital bag.
Calculator displays current week from LMP — useful between visits but clinical assessment by midwife or obstetrician is authoritative.
IVF, IUI and ART pregnancies
Assisted reproduction uses embryo age, not LMP alone. Day 5 blastocyst transfer: add 266 days from transfer (or clinic-specific adjustment). Day 3 embryo: different offset — fertility centre gives official EDD. LMP method fails if ovaries were stimulated and LMP is not meaningful conception marker.
Enter ART date in calculator if IVF mode is available; otherwise use fertility clinic documentation.
Nutrition and hydration in pregnancy
Pregnancy is not time for weight-loss dieting — obstetrician sets appropriate gain (often 10–14 kg for normal BMI Indian women — individualised). Adequate protein, iron, calcium and folate matter — IFA tablets per government and doctor protocol.
Hydration increases — use Water Intake Calculator with pregnancy adjustment; UTIs are common if fluids are low. Do not use Calorie Calculator deficit modes during pregnancy without specialist supervision.
When EDD passes — post-dates pregnancy
Baby not arriving on EDD is normal. Obstetrician monitors amniotic fluid, fetal movements and placental function after 40 weeks — induction may be offered 41–42 weeks based on hospital protocol and risk factors. Reduced fetal movement any time — go to hospital immediately, not calculator.
PCOS and irregular cycles before pregnancy
Women with PCOS often have unpredictable ovulation — LMP date may not reflect true conception. Early ultrasound dating is essential. Pre-conception weight management sometimes improves fertility — BMI Calculator (Asian categories) and gynaecologist-led plan, not self-directed aggressive dieting while trying to conceive.
Step-by-step: using Pregnancy Due Date Calculator
- Enter first day of last menstrual period (not mid-cycle spotting).
- Note EDD and current gestational week.
- Book obstetrician visit before 12 weeks if not already registered.
- Schedule dating scan 8–12 weeks for confirmation.
- Mark anomaly scan window ~18–20 weeks on calendar.
- Plan maternity leave around EDD with employer — flexible for early/late delivery.
- Update calculator if doctor revises dates after ultrasound.
Partner and family preparation
Share EDD with spouse for hospital bag packing, pediatrician shortlist, and elder parent travel plans. Indian joint families may gather for delivery — communicate hospital visitor policies early. Birth plan preferences (epidural, delayed cord clamping, skin-to-skin) discuss with obstetrician in third trimester — flexibility for emergency C-section is essential.
Breastfeeding preparation classes, cord blood banking marketing, and baby product shopping spike in third trimester — budget separately from delivery hospital estimate. Mental health matters; perinatal anxiety is treatable — not weakness.
Government schemes and maternity leave planning
India's Maternity Benefit Act provides 26 weeks paid leave for eligible establishments — plan handover using EDD from calculator as anchor, with flexibility for 2–3 weeks early or late delivery. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and state schemes vary — Anganwadi and ASHA workers guide rural registrations; urban private hospitals issue delivery estimates on discharge planning forms.
JSY and other programmes support institutional delivery — carry MCP card, Aadhaar and antenatal records. EDD helps book anomaly scan and glucose tolerance test leave from office in advance.
High-risk pregnancy and multiples
Twin pregnancies often deliver before 40 weeks — obstetrician may give adjusted EDD or delivery planning earlier. Gestational diabetes, hypertension and placenta previa require specialist care beyond any online tool. IVF twin pregnancies need fertility clinic follow-up schedule, not LMP-only calculator.
Advanced maternal age (35+) warrants earlier genetic counselling discussion and vigilant antenatal monitoring — Naegele rule still applies for dating but risk profile differs; trust maternal-fetal medicine specialist over internet due-date forums.

COVID-era and tele-antenatal care
Teleconsultation for low-risk antenatal queries expanded access in tier-2 India — but blood pressure, urine protein and fetal heart rate need in-person checks on schedule. Calculator gestational week helps know when anomaly scan and OGTT are due if you missed paper MCP card. Keep digital photos of ultrasound reports for second-opinion teleconsults.
Vaccination in pregnancy (flu, Tdap per Indian guidelines) — ask obstetrician at appropriate gestational week; due date calculator trimester display helps timing discussion.
Register birth within legal timeframe per state rules — birth certificate needs accurate delivery date from hospital discharge summary, which may differ slightly from LMP-based EDD. Keep all antenatal ultrasound reports in one folder for paediatrician first visit after birth.
